This is another southern German town, very popular for skiing and only a couple hours train ride from Munich.
When we arrived in the town, there was news of a possible Corona outbreak, so truthfully, I can't say too much about the town since we avoided it a little. But, is it beautiful? Yes. Good hiking? YES.
This walk is so spectacular - essentially, you're going to start buy taking the cable car to the middle station on the Wank mountain, and walk all the way around the mountain, hitting 3 mountain huts along the way. Easy.
The fun thing about this walk is it's not completely downhill. There's a fair amount of up and down, and when you're up, you're going to get spectacular views of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and surrounding towns.
My only tip is check the huts are open. We reached the Esterbergalm but the hut was closed - luckily, I always bring plenty of snacks with me.
After the Alm, you follow the signs to Gschwandtnerbauer which is the next hut. This next section is through a lot of woods, which is nice, and there's a little stream which you can dip your feet in for a little refreshment.
The Gschwandtnerbauer hut was a close second-favourite. It feels fairly secluded, but also was the point where we saw the most people. It looks out over an amazing view of the fields and the mountains. After a drink and a rest, it's back up in to the mountains - this was the hard part, since you're sort of equidistant from the start and finish, and I lagged a little.
Not long after we reached the top of the hill, we reached an open meadow with grazing cows. No problem, we thought - just as long as it's only a couple cows and there's no calves.
Unfortunately, as we rounded the corner, we saw the entire path was covered in cows, and there were calves.
After an ill-feated attempt to go up the sides of the sloped hill and around the cows which led to a lot of mud in our socks and shoes, we decided to just go slowly down the path past them. They didn't seem to mind too much, though they were watching us very carefully as we inched past the calves, but we sped off pretty fast. Thankfully that adreneline rush powered us round the last little section to my favourite hut - the Tannenhütte.
This hut is relatively new, and just stunning. The view is great, but the hut itself is so impressive. It's entirely wood, and still has that new wood look to it. It's modern and architecturally fits so well into the background of the forest.
It's also a relatively short walk up from the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, so you could easily just climb to the hut and enjoy the view (above).
The final walk back in to town is also worth taking time to admire. You'll pass through a small waterfall, and a big golden monument, and then you'll end in a spectacular part of town full of traditional houses. You know when you think of stereotypical wooden, painted houses with flowers hanging off them? This is what you'll see at the end.
After this, the only logical next step was to buy takeaway burgers and eat them on the balcony of our flat. This was also the final outing for my terrible, non-supportive walking boots, and they were dumped the next day as I hobbled back to the train.
The Eibsee is the lake at the bottom of the Zugspitze, which is Germany's tallest mountain. So, this is likely what most people think after skiing when they think of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
And it's absolutely stunning, and definitely worth a visit, but was also way more crowded and tourist-y than I expected. It's a well maintained gravel path around the lake and doesn't take long to walk, so it's worth going slow and enjoying the stunning views. I imagine coming early in the morning (think sunrise) would be magic.
In hindsight, I've no idea why I thought it wouldn't be popular on a sunny September day, but the volume of people, especially at the 'entrance' was overwhelming.
Still, a walk around the lake is still worth it. At the top of the lake, it starts to get a little quieter and you can sit on the lakeshore and swim in the lake (hot tip: the lake bed is seriously rocky, so if you're thinking of doing some serious swimming, maybe bring some rubber sandals or water shoes).
Overall - 5 star lake, beautiful colours and an amazing place to swim. Just don't be surprised by the crowds.
